PASG Spring 2009 Conference - Research and Innovation in Analytical Science
11 and 12 May 2009 , Huntingdon Marriott Hotel, Cambridge
An excellent meeting was held on the 11th and 12th of May on the theme
of Research and Innovation.
In alignment with our vision to further
links with the academic community several presenters from academia were
present.
The meeting commenced with an overview by Pfizer's UK
Vice-President of Analytical of both the current challenges and future
opportunities for the Pharma Analytical community, which generated some
great discussion.
This set a framework for the conference, which
covered some of the challenges facing the industry to date, including
the implementation of Quality-by-Design principles and issues around
recruiting appropriate skill sets, and included overviews of both
current technology together with presentations of new analytical
techniques and their applications within the Pharma sphere.
Innovative
technology applications covered included the use of NMR imaging, Surface
Enhanced Raman spectroscopy, Dynamic Field Gradient Focussing,
micro-Thermal techniques and the use of Quartz Crystal Microgravimetry.
A full report will be published on this site shortly, and presentations
will be uploaded that will be accessible for conference attendees.

Continuous Improvement Meeting - April 2008
A meeting on the application of Continuous Improvement Techniques
(Lean/Six Sigma etc) to Pharma Analysis was held on 22nd April 2008 in
the ABPI London. The meeting was a highly succesful and focussed
discussion and workshop attended by management and analysts involved in
CI initiatives in their respective companies. The output from the
workshop is currently being compiled with a view to potentially
publishing a PASG position paper in this field.
Future Opportunities for the Pharma-Academic Interface
The pharmaceutical industry is undergoing a period of significant change, driven by a number of factors, including;
the increasing complexity of the drug discovery and development process, increasing regulatory
burden and the commoditisation of routine Pharma R&D to low cost countries. Key to our ongoing success within the UK is a focus on
innovation and the development of new scientific talent. The PASG is committed to engaging with UK Academia to drive excellence
in this area. We recently presented our vision at the RSC 2008 Analytical Research Forum - click to view presentation .

Measurement and Analysis in the Pharma Value Chain
Consistent with our remit to drive the future direction of UK analytical science,
members of the Committee recently attended a workshop to brainstorm Measurement and Analysis in the
Pharma Value Chain – organised under the auspices of the Chemistry Innovation Knowledge Transfer
Network - see here -
at the Future Focus facility in London on 23 April 2008. The aim was to conduct a strategic assessment of
how effectively measurement and analytical science supports the pharma value chain and to identify future needs,
and to identify skills and technology/knowledge gaps that need to be addressed.
Around 15 attendess from industry (typically senior analytical management/consultants) attended.
Output will be a position paper that is expected to be used to influence government/research council
spending priorities moving forward.
